DEFINITION:
 
The Director of Nursing is a qualified person appointed by the Director of Professional Services with approval of the Governing Body to direct and coordinate the clinical activities of the Agency. The Director of Nursing is a direct employee of the agency. The Director of Nursing provides overall planning, direction, coordination, management and supervision of all nursing and professional services in conjunction with the Director of Professional Services. The Director of Nursing assures quality of care by reviewing and assessing each service.
 
LINE OF AUTHORITY:  
 
The Director of Nursing reports directly to the Director of Professional Services.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing, licensed in the State of Florida; with home health experience and 1 year supervisory experience as a registered nurse.

  • Experience in the Private Duty Sector of Home Healthcare strongly preferred.
 
  • Evidence of adequate health status to perform duties.
 
  • Ability to learn, absorb and apply professional training.
 
  • Ability to organize work procedures, assume responsibility and effectively   supervise others.
 
  • Demonstrates problem solving abilities and positive interpersonal communication skills are essential.
 
  • Demonstrates effective administration and ability to ensure Agency compliance of the statute and administrative rules of the Agency for Health Care Administration.
                     
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: 
 
·         Oversees the professional and home health aide delivery of services of the agency.
 
·         Supervises all personnel (professional, personal care aides) who provide direct patient care.
 
·         Ensures that all staff providing care maintains professional standards of community nursing practice.
·          
 
   
·         Maintains and adheres to agency procedure and patient care policy manuals.
 
·         Establishes service policies and procedures in compliance with Chapter 64E-16, F.A.C., state health statutes and administrative rules to include CDC guidelines, OSHA guidelines for employee safety, universal precautions, and infection control procedures.
 
·         Employs and evaluates nursing personnel.
 
·         Coordinates patient care services. Attends and participates in patient care conferences.
 
·         Establishes and conducts an ongoing quality assurance program that meets the following requirements:
Ø Case assignment and management is appropriate, adequate, and consistent with the plan of care, and patient needs; 
Ø All services provided to the patient are coordinated, appropriate, adequate and consistent with plans of care; 
Ø All services and outcomes are completely and legibly documented, dated and signed in the clinical services record;
Ø Confidentiality of patient care is maintained; and
Ø Findings of the quality assurance program are used to improve services.
 
·         Set or adopt policies for and keep records of criteria for admission to service, case assignments and case management.
 
·         Provides guidance and is a resource for internal and external clinical staff. Communicates policies and procedures of the Agency to the staff.
 
·         Keeps informed and up to date in all aspects of nursing care and management through literature, workshops, seminars, courses and conferences with other Patient Care Services persons and promotes staff development.
 
·         Maintains confidentiality of Patient and Agency matters. 
 
·         Ensures that all staff is adequately orientated to the Agency prior to patient contact.
 
·         Ensures that all personal care services are provided under a written assignment.
 
·         Ensures that continuing education is available for staff participation.
 
·         Is available at all times during business hours or designates in writing a qualified alternate registered nurse to serve in her/his   absence. 
 
·         Makes the initial evaluation visits as required.
·         Re-evaluates patient's nursing needs on a regular basis. Reports to the Director of Professional Services regarding changes that affect the Agency.
 
·         Reports to the Director of Professional Services regarding changes that affect the Agency.
